This Spring I had the honor of teaching a short version of a new class called “Poetry and The Great Green Mystery” through The Shipman Agency’s Work Room, a beautiful online classroom space made to explore creative writing across multiple genres.
It was such a delight reading and writing poems about green with the amazing poets who took my class. At one point we had a discussion about the honesty of green.
I wrote the poem below inspired by our discussion.
Long Live The Great Green Mystery!

Honest Green
For Sarah Kezman, Xiaowei Wang, Emily Stutz, Megan Pinto, and Amy Gaizauskas
Life is an honest green
But everything that pretends
Is an evil one
Nature doesn’t pretend
There’s no lie
To a series of eights
Green is honest, truly
It’s right there
Relentlessly hot
Thriving in the holy spot
Greenish sponge
Soaked through with green
Did you get that
Green saltwater
Which I dripped
Upon your lips
Did you get there
Where you are going
Leaves are the realest green
Because they don’t have to be
The electric charge of life
Has no reason to demure
It glows and preens
Lowly green
Won’t you please
Turn the corner for me
And tell me
What you saw there
What did you see
Tell me tell me
But don’t leave
Do it and arrive
So quickly
Back home to me
My dearest friend
Without you
I have truly
Nothing left to be
Realest green
Submerged in green
Slickback rainbow
Filled with a hunger
Oh shiny green
Do it again
Swooning over this stunning poem! Honored to be in your class! Thank you for a magical experience! 💚💚💚
Can stop reading and swooning!!!
